This is for my granddaughter, Sofia. We went to the Binder Park Zoo in 2021, during which I started working on this song. When I finished the song, I knew I just needed a photo of the two of us, which was taken by her mom, Rebecca Oemke, at the Potter Park Zoo (in Lansing) June 2022. You and I, we went to a zoo,
we saw a gator and a kangaroo,
when then big elephant made a big poo,
I said it’s just like me and you.
We saw a monkey playing with his food,
he flicked away something, that didn’t look so good
I said, “I think you’ve done that, too,
the monkey’s just like me and you.”
They eat and eat and eat and poo and poo and poo/ just like me and you and you and you; / they eat and eat and poo and poo and poo / just like me and you and you and you!
We saw a polar bear drinking from a pool
A penguin did the same and he was pretty cool!
When the big iguana drank some water too
I said he’s just like me and you.
We saw some lemurs playing in the trees,
and we saw a sloth–it was moving lazily,
when the big zebu made a puddle of pee
I said it’s just like you and me.
They drink and drink and drink and pee and pee and pee / just like you and me and me and me; / they drink and drink and drink and pee and pee and pee / just like you and me and me and me.
We saw baby animals at the petting zoo
the duckling went QUACK! and the calf went MOO!
When the little lamb called out for its mamma too
I said they’re just like me and you.
All the zoo animals are there for you and me
Cuz few of us will ever see a zebra running free
Zookeepers make their lives as good as they can be
in part cuz they’re like you and me
They eat and eat and eat and poo and poo and poo / just like me and you and you and you / they drink and drink and pee and pee and pee / just like you and me and me and me!
We went to the pound and we got a pu-u-py
He relies on us for everything he needs
for food and water, exercise, and outside to poop and pee
because he’s mostly like you and me
All of the wildlife everywhere you see
they al-so rely on you and me
for habitat and purity of rivers and our seas
because they’re just like you and me
They eat and eat and eat and poo and poo and poo/ just like me and you and you and you / they drink and drink and drink and pee and pee and pee / just like you and me and me and me.
Let’s make their lives as good as they can be!!
